Recommendations for Studio Class Supply Kit

This page covers the frequently asked questions that I get from students registering for a studio class.

If you are unable to find an answer to your question here, please send me a note and I will be happy to help: info@kindriegrove.com

The Studio Classes are self-directed, that means that you are free to work on and develop your artistic skills in whatever area you are interested in. This includes both your chosen medium as well as your subject matter.

I believe that exposure to as many different materials and processes is essential for you to discover the modality that is right for your own artistic expression. All styles and skill levels are welcome in the Studio Sessions. The instruction that I give to the group is helpful for all levels and there is always one-on-one student/instructor time during the classes.

The Following is a list of recommended supplies for people to bring to my studio classes. This list includes the basics that should be in your supply kit.

  • Sketchbook – this can be hard bound or coil, whatever you enjoy using. It is often helpful to have on hand to jot notes or work out compositional problems and ideas before committing to paint.
  • Various drawing pencils, charcoal pencils or sticks. Eraser – I find that the kneaded erasers work the best.
  • Painting supplies -this will either be oil, acrylic, watercolour or all three.  You need your paints, brushes, palette and cleaning rags and containers. If you are working with oil, please bring a non-toxic paint thinner like eco-house or Turpinoid Natural.
  • Easels, chairs and side tables are supplied in the studio.
  • Be sure to have your main canvases for your larger projects, but it is also very useful to have several small canvas boards or canvas paper for short studies and exercises which I often work a class through in the first half hour to teach a concept.
  • Source material – it is very important to get together a binder or envelope of photos, magazine clippings and other sources of inspiration so that you are never at a loss for what to paint or draw during the class. Your source library will be great fodder to draw upon during the exercise portion of the studio class.
  • For more in-depth information on supply recommendations for your chosen medium please see Material Picks and Suggestions.
